From a gentle stroll along the Mangawhero River Walkway to the majestic Waitonga Falls and the alpine vistas of the Ohakune Mountain Road, the local trails offer a perfect way to immerse yourself in ancient forests, volcanic landscapes, and breathtaking views of Mount Ruapehu.

Ohakune is a fantastic starting point for a variety of walks that showcase the natural beauty of the region, from easy riverside strolls to more challenging hikes with stunning views. Below are half a dozen local options to whet your appetite.

Mangawhero River Walkway (30mins one-way)

This easy and family-friendly track follows the banks of the Mangawhero River, connecting the Junction end of Ohakune to the main town. The well-maintained path meanders through open areas and native beech trees, offering pleasant views of the river and Mount Ruapehu. It's a great option for a leisurely walk or a quick link between parts of town.

Mangawhero Forest Walk Loop (45mins-1hr loop)

A wonderful walk for nature lovers, this loop track winds through a dense native forest on the lower slopes of Mount Ruapehu. The path climbs gently at first, leading you through towering rimu, mataī, and kahikatea trees. It crosses the Ohakune Mountain Road before looping back down, providing a peaceful immersion into the native bush.

Jubilee Park Walk (20-30mins loop)

Located at the southern end of Ohakune, this short, easy walk is perfect for all ages. The trail winds through a scenic reserve along the Mangateitei Stream, offering a tranquil escape into the native bush. It's a great spot for a quick 20-minute stroll and is even wheelchair-friendly in some areas.

Ohakune Old Coach Road/Hâpuawhenua Viaduct (2hr return)

Step back in time on this historic trail, a key section of the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail. The track follows the original cobblestone road used by horse-drawn coaches to transport passengers and goods between two railheads. The two-hour return walk to the Hapuawhenua Viaduct is highly recommended. This beautifully restored curved viaduct, a spectacular piece of engineering from the early 1900s, offers incredible views and a fantastic photo opportunity.

Waitonga Falls Track (1hr 45mins return)

For a rewarding walk with a stunning payoff, head to the Waitonga Falls Track. Located 11km up the Ohakune Mountain Road, this moderate track leads you through mountain beech forest to the highest waterfall in Tongariro National Park, the magnificent 39-meter Waitonga Falls. On a clear day, you can enjoy fantastic views of Mount Ruapehu and the surrounding alpine landscape. The track is approximately 4km return and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Te Ara Mangawhero Walk and Cycle (2hr Loop/walk)

The newest and still-developing trail in the area, Te Ara Mangawhero is a fantastic option for both walkers and cyclists. This trail is part of the larger Mountains to Sea Great Ride and incorporates sections of the historic Bennett and Punch bush tramway. It offers a unique mix of native forest, historic tramway remnants, and spectacular views of Mount Ruapehu. The completed phase one offers a scenic loop, with ongoing development creating an ever-expanding network of tracks for you to explore.

For Something a Bit Longer and More Challenging

Lake Surprise Walk – (5.5hrs return)

For those seeking a more adventurous day hike, the Lake Surprise Walk offers a true taste of Tongariro National Park's raw, volcanic landscape. This intermediate track is a section of the longer Round the Mountain Track and takes you on a captivating journey. -

Important: This is a backcountry hike. Always check the weather forecast and track conditions with the Department of Conservation (DOC) before you go. It is essential to be well-prepared with appropriate footwear, warm clothing, and sufficient food and water. This walk should only be attempted in winter with proper winter hiking gear or with a guided group.
